The Department of Homeland Security is considering a plan to use license plate information.

FOX Chief Intelligence Correspondent Catherine Herridge has more as part of our ongoing series on national security:

Securing America.

The Homeland Security Department wants to harness the power of license plate readers for immigration and customs cases, by accessing a national database.

The ACLU’s Catherine Crump says there are virtually no rules for retaining or sharing the data:

Crump: “It creates sort of a comprehensive database of where people go, um, what they do and creates a net that no matter how innocent you are, you can’t escape having your movements permanently monitored and recorded.”

Homeland Security says the database would not be held by the Government, but by a third party– and it would only be used for criminal cases.

In Washington, Catherine Herridge, FOX News Radio.
