Shirley Temple, who sang and danced her way into the hearts of America has died of natural causes at age 85. She was the country’s biggest box office draw from 1935 to 1938, beating out other silver screen legends like Clark Gable, Bing Crosby and Joan Crawford — a record no other child star has come near.

General Assembly, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the collapse of communism in 1989. Shirley Temple died surrounded by her family at her San Francisco home.

“Barbara and I mourn the loss of an American icon, Shirley Temple Black. She captured the affections of millions around the world by her endearing performances on the silver screen as a young girl, but I also admired Shirley for her selfless service to our country later in her life. In both roles, she truly lifted people up and earned not only a place in our hearts — but also our enduring respect.
