‘Selfie’ Wins 2013 “Word Of The Year” [PHOTOS]
The Oxford Dictionary’s publisher has named its top word for 2013. And if you’re on Facebook or Twitter, then you’ve probably seen a ‘selfie’ or two.
FOX News Radio’s Simon Owen reports:
Oxford dictionaries saying its the “Word Of The Year” is ‘selfie’– a term used to describe a self-taken photograph — often on a smartphone and often quickly uploaded to social media websites. They’re also popular with celebrities.
McPherson: “We’ve actually found evidence going back as far as 2002.”
Dictionary Editor Fiona McPherson saying the word itself is nothing new, but usage in the past year has gone up by 17,000%. Oxford Dictionaries publishes the Oxford English Dictionary– which it calls the definitive record of the English language. ’Selfie’ isn’t included yet, but is under consideration.
