Veterans Visit WWII Memorial Despite Government Shutdown

    The government shutdown is unofficially set aside for a time at one national memorial.

    FOX News Radio’s Lisa Brady has the story:

    Busloads of World War II veterans, barricaded out of the national memorial built in their honor: Apparently a bridge too far for some members of Congress, who may have helped cut police tape and move barricades, to let veterans in.

    (Edgar) “It’s kind of heartwarming and heartbreaking about it, and we hope that they can get things worked out.”

    Wheelchair-bound Navy vet Rayford Edgar, part of a group from Mississippi making one of the free visits planned months in advance, by the Honor Flight Network.

    National Parks service spokeswoman Carol Johnson, says they were just following orders:

    (Johnson) “To close all facilities and all grounds in the National Park Service.”

    Because hundreds of workers who man the sites have been sent home.
