Holder Takes On Texas Over Voting Laws
The Justice Department brings new action under the Voting Rights Law, just weeks after the Supreme Court voided part of the law.
FOX News Radio’s Steve Taylor reports from Washington:
The Supreme Court overturned only the part of the Voting Rights Law that sets the formula for finding discrimination, but discrimination itself still is banned. Attorney General Eric Holder says it is the duty of the Justice Department….
(Holder) “To keep taking appropriately aggressive action against any jurisdiction that attempts to hinder free and fair access to the franchise.”
And Holder says there was evidence of intentional racial discrimination by Texas in a redistricting case last year. So, he tells the National Urban League, he’ll ask a federal court to make Texas get advance approval before changing its voting practices.

READ a statement from Texas Governor Rick Perry:
“Once again, the Obama Administration is demonstrating utter contempt for our country’s system of checks and balances, not to mention the U.S. Constitution. This end-run around the Supreme Court undermines the will of the people of Texas, and casts unfair aspersions on our state’s common-sense efforts to preserve the integrity of our elections process.”
