Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed a controversial immigration bill into law Friday afternoon.  The legislation makes it a crime under state law to be in the state without proper documentation, requires local police to question people about their immigration status if there’s reason to suspect they’re in the country illegally (and allows for traffic stops to check for proper legal identification), and allows for lawsuits against government agencies that prevent proper enforcement of immigration laws.

Outside the state Capitol, protestors urged the governor not to sign the bill, claiming it would lead to civil rights abuses.
