Jury Sides With Fired Ohio Teacher

    Christa Dias

An appeal is expected after a jury sides with a teacher who was fired from a Catholic school after getting pregnant.

FOX News Radio’s Jennifer Keiper explains the case:

A jury has found an Ohio archdiocese discriminated against teacher Christa Dias when it fired her after she got pregnant via artificial insemination.

    Dias’ attorney, Robert Klingler:

Klingler: “She was pregnant and unmarried. That’s the reason that the school gave. But, under Federal law, it doesn’t matter if you’re married or unmarried. You’re protected by the law.”

Archdiocese attorney Steve Goodin says the church considers artificial insemination a violation of church doctrine and they always viewed this as a contract case first and foremost:

Goodin: “…and then sort of a general First Amendment case secondarily, which was that any church, school, no matter what denomination, ought to have the right to enforce its own doctrine within its four walls.”

A Federal jury has awarded the fired teacher more than $170,000.
