New Military Reviews Take Cue From Private Sector

Scandals involving officers are causing the U.S. military to make a drastic change in personnel evaluations.

FOX News Radio’s Steve Knight reports:

Taking a cue from the private sector, the military will start using so-called “360-degree performance evaluations.”  For the first time, even the highest-ranking officers will be evaluated by their peers and those they command.

The New York Times reports that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey ordered the change as part of a broad overhaul of training and development programs.  The general says he is “disturbed about misconduct issues,” and wants a better way to assess character and competence.

He acknowledges that some senior officers warn that the change risks damaging the military’s command system and might weaken discipline.
