Hospital Alarm Study

Hospital Alarms

(Beeping of hospital monitors)

Constantly beeping alarms in hospitals can be deadly.  The Joint Commission hospital accrediting group’s warning that the alarms can lead to what it calls “noise fatigue,” with doctors and nurses sometimes inadvertently ignoring the sounds when there’s a real patient emergency – which could result in treatment delays, putting patients in danger.

The group says a government database lists more than 500 deaths potentially linked with hospital alarms in recent years.
