Photo Voter ID Becomes Law In Virginia

The Virginia Governor has signed a bill into law that requires voters to carry photo identification with them to the polls.

FOX News Radio’s Mike Majchrowitz reports from Washington:

Next year in Virginia, to get a ballot you’ll need to show photo-identification. Governor Bob McDonnell, a Republican,  signing the legislation into law making the commonwealth the fifth state with photo ID election requirements in force.

It replaces a less stringent ID requirement, which Republicans say is necessary to prevent voting fraud. But opponents see it as an attempt to suppress voter turnout among those who would normally vote for Democrats. Under the law, voters who can’t afford to pay for an ID can get one for free.

Editor’s Note: Georgia, Indiana, Tennessee and Kansas currently have voter-ID laws in effect. Mississippi, Texas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have passed similar measures that have yet to take effect.
