Tax Refund Thefts

Here’s some motivation to get your taxes in now. The longer you wait, the easier it is for tax fraudsters to steal your refund from you.

FOX’s Phil Keating has the story from Miami:

Tax ID fraud is now the number one fraud in Florida, number three nationwide. It’s incredibly easy. The crooks first obtain your name and social security number then e-file a bogus return in your name and then have the IRS deposit that refund to a pre-paid debit card. A hundred percent of this fraud is done via e-filing. It cost the government five billion dollars last year.

Victims suffer with a burden of proof and when they don’t get their tax refunds for many months later. And since this fraud is done on the internet, it’s very hard to catch these thieves.
