WA Man Pushes For Law Mandating Wrongful Jail Pay
A man who spent nearly two decades in jail for a crime that he didn’t commit is pushing lawmakers in the Pacific Northwest to make automatic compensation for those in his position a part of state law.
FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has the story:
Alan Northrop was convicted of rape in 1993, but went to jail even though DNA would later prove he was innocent.
(Northrop) “Not watching my kids grow up and being involved with their everyday things.”
Kids that he now owes 17 years worth of child support for. Northrop now pushing Washington state legislators to enact a law paying those wrongfully convicted $50,000 a year for every year they spend behind bars.
(Northrop) “Deficit or not, they need to make it right…and they know it.”
The House bill would add an additional $50,000 for every year on death row and $25,000 for each year on parole or as a registered sex offender.
