President Obama says it’s time for the nation to reconsider the role of guns in society as he lays out a plan he hopes will reduce gun violence.

FOX News Radio’s Mike Majchrowitz reports from the White House:

Gun owners and dealers are reacting to the President’s Executive Orders and proposals to curb gun violence.

(McCall) “Our rights will not be infringed upon.”

Jerry McCall with Texas Guns in San Antonio, one of the state’s largest dealers, says his shelves are now bare.

(McCall) “And law-abiding citizens should be able to purchase.  It’s their Consitutional right.”

And gun owners also tell us instead of focusing on the weapon, the President should target the mind of the madman.

By the way, the Entertainment Gaming Association, out with a statement saying they’re not responsible for violence in the real world.

READ a statement from the National Rifle Association of America in response to President Obama’s gun control proposals:

“Throughout its history, the National Rifle Association has led efforts to promote safety and responsible gun ownership. Keeping our children and society safe remains our top priority.

The NRA will continue to focus on keeping our children safe and securing our schools, fixing our broken mental health system, and prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law. We look forward to working with Congress on a bi-partisan basis to find real solutions to protecting America’s most valuable asset – our children.

Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation. Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy.”

READ a statement from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on the gun control proposals:

“I have deep respect and admiration for President Obama and Vice President Biden for the comprehensive and commonsense reforms they outlined this morning. They spoke with conviction and compassion for the victims of gun violence in this country, and I applaud them for tackling this plague of violence with the urgency it deserves.

“The executive actions and proposals announced today will dramatically improve the background check system, protect law enforcement and resume gun violence research in this country.

“Finally, I support the president’s call to reinstate the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. He was exactly right when he said ‘weapons designed for the theater of war have no place’ in our society. I couldn’t agree more. These weapons have one purpose: to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time possible.

“Next week, Senate and House cosponsors will introduce legislation to prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices that carry more than 10 rounds. I hope that Chairman Leahy will hold hearings on this bill in the Judiciary Committee as soon as possible.”

READ a statement from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on the gun control proposals:

“The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School is heartbreaking and beyond words.  However, the gun control plans brought forward by President Obama fail to address the real issues and I’m confident there will be bipartisan opposition to his proposal.

“One bullet in the hands of a homicidal maniac is one too many.  But in the case of a young mother defending her children against a home invader — a real-life event which recently occurred near Atlanta — six bullets may not be enough.  Criminals aren’t going to follow legislation limiting magazine capacity.  However, a limit could put law-abiding citizens at a distinct disadvantage when confronting a criminal.

“As for reinstating the assault weapons ban, it has already been tried and failed.

“Finally, when it comes to protecting our schools, I believe the best way to confront a homicidal maniac who enters a school is for them to be met by armed resistance from a trained professional.”

READ a statement from Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on the gun control proposals:

“I thank the President’s task force for its thoughtful recommendations. I am committed to ensuring that the Senate will consider legislation that addresses gun violence and other aspects of violence in our society early this year. The tragedy at Sandy Hook was just the latest sad reminder that we are not doing enough to protect our citizens – especially our children – from gun violence and a culture of violence, and all options should be on the table moving forward.”
