Securing America: U.S. Future in Afghanistan

President Obama will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai this week as he contemplates the U.S. role in that country after 2014.

FOX News Radio White House Correspondent Mike Majchrowitz reports in our ongoing series on national security:

Securing America.

While the President campaigned in 2008 on Afghanistan being the proper conflict for U.S. involvement, in 2012, he made minimizing U.S. involvement there a key focus of his campaign.  Negotiations with Iraq on long-term cooperation went badly, leaving no U.S. military presence behind.

U.S. officials have said the Administration foresees a continuing role for the U.S. in Afghanistan, but not what size that may be.  The general consensus is that the Afghan government is not ready to go it alone.
