Head Games: The Dark Side of Football
The NFL is the crown jewel in a crowded sports landscape. But more and more the game of football is coming under increased scrutiny because of a serious health issue; concussions and the lingering effects on the human brain. Just this summer, popular former star Junior Seau took his own life. His brain is currently being studied to see if it will show the ill effects of playing football. Dave Duerson and Ray Easterling were also former players that committed suicide. Their fully examined minds have shown a disease called CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which causes people to show symptoms of dementia, memory loss and depression.
A group of more than 3,000 former players and their families are suing the NFL, claiming they knew or should have known the danger these athletes were facing playing the game. The league has responded, denying the claim and putting in new rules and programs for prevention and treatment.
