OH Man Helps Panhandler, Gets Ticket
“No good deed goes unpunished.” That’s the lesson one Ohio man is learning the hard way after getting a hefty fine for trying to help a homeless man.
FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has the story:
John Davis, pleading not guilty Tuesday to a littering ticket, a summons he received for giving a panhandler in a wheelchair $2 alongside a Cleveland highway.
(Davis) “He touched it, it hit the ground. At that point, he bent over and he picked it up.”
Seconds later, Davis – whose paralyzed brother uses a wheelchair – was pulled over.
(Davis) “Proceeds to tell me that he’s pulling me over for littering. I said, ‘Are you serious?’ He said, ‘I’m darn serious.'”
Soliciting or giving money on the side of the road is illegal in Cleveland, but the fine for that is $160. Davis’s littering fine: $344.
Police, simply saying Davis broke the law, but not disclosing why the officer wrote the higher fine.
