UT High School Fined By Feds For Selling Soda

Giving students easy access to a sugar high at the wrong time is going to cost a Utah high school in a big way.

FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has details:

Davis High School faces a $15,000 dollar fine.  The crime: selling soda during lunch.

The school gets the $15,000 grand from the Federal government, but with a catch; Federal law bans the sale of pop during lunch hours.  Principal Dee Burton says the mandate is just too confusing.

(Burton) “We can sell a Snickers bar, but we can’t sell licorice.  We can’t sell Swedish fish, but we can sell ice cream.”

The school makes roughly $15,000 a year off the vending machines, money used to pay for arts programs and other activities.  Students say it should be their choice.

(Student) “It’s kind of ridiculous.  I mean, it’s soda pop.  It’s not gonna kill us.”

But for now, the school is pulling the plugs on the soda machines.
