Happy 50th Birthday, Hip-Hop!
To commemorate this significant anniversary, Abby is joined by Assistant Professor of Hip Hop Studies and Digital Media at the Georgia Institute of Technology Dr. Joycelyn Wilson for a lesson about the hip hop genre and culture.
Dr. Wilson discusses the origins of hip hop, dating all the way back to 1973 in New York City. She defines key terms within hip hop culture and provides examples of prominent artists who helped define the genre. Later, Dr. Wilson examines how hip hop has changed throughout the years, from messaging to style, and explains how hip hop influences and is influenced by the culture around it.
