Government Seeks Limits on High-Tech Cars
The government has a message to car makers: reign in distracting the bells and whistles. The guidelines are aimed at passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, not trucks. The government last year urged all states to impose total ban on texting, emailing or chatting on cellphones while driving except for emergencies.
FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso reports:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has concerns about driver distractions from all the multi-tasking dashboard gadgets allowing for text-messaging, internet browsing and gps navigation being loaded into our dashboards.
And they’re now asking automakers to disable the bells and whistles while vehicles are in motion, and to make dashboard devices less distracting. To provide features that consumers want, without disrupting our attention or sacrificing safety.
The NHTSA is also considering future guidelines to address portable electronic devices that also take drivers eyes away from the road.
