Bret Baier Reflects Back On Reporting On The War In Afghanistan

Bret Baier, Chief Political Anchor for Fox News & Anchor of ‘Special Report with Bret Baier’ joined Fox News Radio’s Guy Benson Show

Baier reflected on covering the 20 year long war saying,
“My reflection, my reflections are this 19 years eight months ago, I landed in a C17 with then Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and a number of reporters at Bagram Air Base. And we were met at the plane by a group of Northern Alliance fighters who were armed to the teeth. And we didn’t know what to expect when we got off that plane. They told us to stay on the tarmac so that we didn’t walk where the landmines potentially were, just outside the tarmac itself. From that point, I traveled all over Afghanistan and in different ways and Guy the stories there really are amazing what the U.S. military was able to do. You know, we weren’t about nation building, but in essence, we were. And there were, you know, 20 year old captains of of an army battalion and or unit. And they go into a village and they would suddenly, you know, provide water, build a school, get the village operational. And that’s the fact that all of these people did all of this stuff. There’s a lot of criticism about all of the meandering of the mission. But to see what actually happened and to to see how that country changed from respecting women, it really was amazing over the years. And now to see it kind of come to an end like this is it’s fairly painful. And you know that the people who served there are feeling that, too. And that’s what we had to make sure we are grateful and thankful and say it to everybody who served.”
