Terror Attack at Western Hotel in Kabul

Gunshots and explosions erupt inside a high-end hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan.  The Intercontinental Hotel is a western-style hotel popular with the Afghan elite and foreigners.

The security is considered so good on the hill that major press conferences are often held there.

U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland released this statement on the attack:

The United States strongly condemns the attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, which once again demonstrates the terrorists’ complete disregard for human life.

We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this attack.

We express our support for the Afghan security forces who are working to secure the site.

All Chief of Mission personnel are accounted for.  We do not have any information about private American citizens at this time, but continue to follow up on the situation.

The State Department says U.S. Ambassador Marc Grossman and all members of his delegation departed Kabul earlier Tuesday, en route to Washington.
