President Obama Bans Offshore Drilling

President Obama is using his executive powers once again before he leaves office.

FOX’s Rachel Sutherland reports from Washington:

In a last ditch effort to save his environmental legacy, President Obama announced a sweeping ban on offshore drilling across large swaths of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

The ban, announced in conjunction with the Canadian government, revives a 1953 provision that allows the President to ban offshore leases in the outer Continental Shelf permanently.

Although the move uses executive powers, environmental groups are hoping it will be difficult for President-elect Donald Trump to reverse the ban. The American Petroleum Institute says there’s no such thing as a permanent ban.
