We Want You: Military Changing Tone on Their Physical Standards

Overweight, tatooed and stoned? The U.S. Military may still want you.

    FOX’s Lucas Tomlinson reports:

Overweight, tatooed and stoned? The U.S. Military may still want you. The Pentagon is considering changes to its standards in an attempt to woo more recruits.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter made the announcement recently at City College of New York:

(Carter) “We’ll always have to maintain high standards. At the same time, these benchmarks must be kept relevant for both today’s force and tomorrow’s, meaning we have to ensure that they’re not unnecessarily restricted.”

Carter wants more young people to consider joining the military who don’t currently meet the standard. Yet, the military says they are currently meeting their recruiting goals.

Over the past year, the Pentagon has made major changes to its fighting force. Combat jobs are now open to women, the transgender ban has been lifted. Some critics think the Pentagon is moving too fast with its social changes.

Kori Schake served in the Bush White House:

(Schake) “We shouldn’t make changes to military policy unless they increase lethality on the battlefield.”
