Is Youth Soccer Just as Bad as Football?
Could playing soccer be just as dangerous as playing football when it comes to youth and head related injuries?
FOX’s Jeff Monosso has more:
Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, looked youth soccer injuries over the last 25 years:
(Mehan) “And found that on average, every day in the U.S. more than 328 children between seven and 17 are treated in hospital emergency departments for injuries sustained while playing soccer.”
Spokeswoman Tracy Mehan encouraging soccer, though saying the results of the study published in Pediatrics shows that injuries have doubled since 1990, partially because of the popularity of the sport, with sprains and fractures, the most common type of injury and a trend that she says underscores the need for better conditioning and safety gear.
