Congress Passes Bill to Change Food Labels

An upcoming bill will modify food labeling to indicate if foods have ingredients that are genetically modified.

FOX’s Gurnal Scott has the story:

The bill, now headed to President Obama’s desk, will require packaged foods to have some indicator of whether they contain genetically modified ingredients, or GMO’s, which could be as simple as a symbol or text label.

It could also be contained in a bar code on the product. Food labeling advocates oppose using the bar code method because of the general public’s inability to read them.

After the president signs the bill, which The White House says he will, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will have two years to write rules and select a labeling approach.
