Study: U.S. College Endowments Had Worst Year Since Recession

    A new study shows that college endowments with their worst year since 2009.

    The National Association of College and University Business Officers and the Commonfund Institute reports that U.S. college endowments lost money on their investments last year, continuing a downward slide that researchers say threatens to put a pinch on budgets.

    Among 800 schools included in the study, the average endowment dragged down two percent by global stocks and hedge funds, the worst performance since 2009 as 74 percent of the schools in the report show an average 4.3 percent increase in spending.
