President Obama Nullifies Cuba ‘Wet Foot-Dry Foot’ Policy

As one of the final acts of his administration, President Obama is making a change that affects Cubans seeking a new start in the U.S.

FOX’s Gurnal Scott with the story:

The President says no longer will Cuban citizens be allowed to stay and pursue legal residency by simply setting foot on American soil.

The so-called ‘Wet Foot-Dry Foot’ policy was enacted in 1995 by then President Bill Clinton. The policy revision does not affect those Cubans already along a path to U.S. citizenship.

The Cuban government has not been a fan of the policy, often saying it encourages natives to risk the treacherous 90-mile journey over water to the U.S. mainland.

The move by President Obama, who has worked to improve relations with Cuba, seems to fall in line with the tougher immigration stance of President-elect Donald Trump.
