Senate Pushes for Tougher Sanctions on Russia

A bipartisan push in the Senate to strengthen sanctions against Russia after an intelligence report accuses the Kremlin of interference in the 2016 election.

FOX’s Jared Halpern has more from Capitol Hill:

Ten Senators, five Republicans and five Democrats have signed on to a new Russia sanctions package:

(Graham) “Well, I’d to thank President Putin for bringing us all together. That’s hard to do around here.”

South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham wants Russia to pay a heavy price, not just for election-related email hacks, but also for the annexation of Crimea and support of the Assad regime in Syria.

Maryland Democrat Ben Cardin says sanctions target individuals, intelligence agencies and energy assets:

(Cardin) “We need to take steps to make it clear that this kind of activity will have consequences.”

President-elect Trump has downplayed Russia’s role in the election and suggested rolling back some sanctions.
