Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year: ‘Xenophobia’

Dictionary.com is out with its Word of the Year.

    FOX’s Pat O’Neill has more:

No doubt you’ve heard the word in the news: Xenophobia. The website defines it as “Fear or hatred of foreigners. People from different cultures or strangers.”

Dictionary.com says the word of Greek origin entered the English language in the late 1800’s.

Searches for the word spiked by 938 percent in June on Brexit day, when the U.K. voted to leave the European Union, but searches for Xenophobia have been up all year.

The word by the way is spelled X-E-N-O-P-H-O-B-I-A. Dictionary.com began choosing a Word of the Year in 2010 based on searches and agreement of its in-house experts.
