Defense Secretary Carter Tells Pentagon to Stand Down on Reclaiming Bonuses

An about face from the Pentagon after demanding refunds for soldiers.

FOX’s Jon Decker has more from the White House:

Defense Secretary Ash Carter has ordered the Pentagon to suspend efforts to reclaim re-enlistment bonuses of thousands of California National Guard soldiers.

In a statement, Carter said the process for many has moved too slowly, which has led to “unreasonable burdens on service members.”

The suspension of efforts to seek the repayments of $15,000 or more in re-enlistment bonuses does not necessarily mean that the debts have been forgiven.

Prior to Carter’s announcement, the House Oversight Committee said it launched an investigation into the Pentagon’s attempt to reclaim the bonuses for soldiers who agreed to re-enlist for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
