'Star Trek' celebrates its 50th today (Thursday).

FOX's Michelle Pollino reports: 

Captain's Log Stardate September 8, 2016, this is the date of the 50th Anniversary of 'Star Trek'.

William Shatner who played Captain James T. Kirk, explains the appeal of this longstanding television series:

(Shatner) "There were shows that had such brilliant ideas behind them, that they are unforgettable."

The series created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966 to imagine the future has humans exploring space, encountering all sorts of aliens.

A commemorative Blu-Ray box set featuring the entire original series and films has been released to celebrate.
