Officials in Kansas have an update on a police officer's death in the line of duty.

FOX's Tonya J. Powers has details:

The Kansas City, Kansas police chief says the shooting death of Captain Robert Melton was not an ambush. He was killed when he encountered a drive-by shooting suspect, who opened fire on Captain Melton Tuesday afternoon. The suspect is in custody.

Melton's death is the second time a Kansas City, Kansas police officer has been shot and killed this year. In early May, detective Brad Lancaster was shot to death near the Kansas Speedway.

(Holland) "Two criminals in two months will not undo 20 years of successful partnership between our police and our community."

That's Kansas City Mayor Mark Holland.

Melton, a 17-year veteran of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, had served in the police honor guard at Lancaster's funeral.
