Execution’s Down Across the United States

The number of people executed in the U.S. is at its lowest level in decades…

FOX’s Tonya J. Powers has the story:

The number of people executed in the United States hasn’t been this low since 1991… The new numbers come from the Death Penalty Information Center, a nonprofit that opposes capital punishment.

It says 28 inmates were executed as of Tuesday, way below the peak of 98 in 1999.

A shortage of lethal injection drugs has meant freezes in executions in several states, while another factor in the recent decline is improved legal representation for defendants.

Capital punishment is legal is 31 states, but only six of those accounted for all the executions this year.

Texas had the most executions with 13, followed by six in Missouri, and five in Georgia.
