Dodgers Name Dave Roberts Manager

The Dodgers have hired their first minority manager.

FOX’s Jessica Rosenthal has more from Los Angeles:

Dave Roberts is half African American, half Japanese. He played for the Dodgers from 2002 to 2004, but also played in Cleveland, Boston, San Francisco and San Diego.

In a statement Roberts said, “it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.” He called the Dodgers a groundbreaking franchise of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Sandy Koufax.

While he has no MLB managerial experience he was recently a first base coach for the Padres. Roberts was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010, but announced he was in remission the next year.

Also in his statement, Roberts called the new position a responsibility to honor those that came before him and to the fans and said there’s plenty of unfinished business left in LA.
