FDA Approves Genetically Modified Salmon
The first genetically modified farm animal gets government approval.
FOX’s Lilian Woo reports:
The FDA green-lights genetically modified salmon — The first altered animal approved for human consumption in the U.S.
Some say modified animals could mean cleaner disease-free ones that would be cleaner and grow more efficiently.
Consumer demand is unclear but Chef Brian Alberg doesn’t think his customers will be clamoring for it.
(Alberg) “I personally will stick with what I know is true versus gamble with genetically modified product.”
Alberg of of Eat On North and the award winning the Red Lion Inn of Massachusetts, a strong supporter of the local food movement. He says fish, though, is not in everyone’s budget…
(Alberg) “It drives the salmon prices down and people that are less fortunate can afford fish, maybe it is a healthier choice for them.”
Opponents urging several major retailers not to sell the fish.
