California Bears Searching For Food

If you want to see a bear in the wild odds are pretty good in one area of California, but the reason they’re popping up around people is because they can’t find food.

    FOX News’ Jessica Rosenthal reports:

People in the town outside the entrance to Sequoia National Park are seeing a lot more bears lately…

(Cordes) “The drought seems to have pushed them into some areas where they’re not normally found.”

Lake Hume Ranger District Biologist Jeff Cordes says he’s seen in higher elevations where the bears normally live that the meadows aren’t producing as many berries and the acorn crop is weak…

(Cordes) “Their mission this time of year was to put on as much weight as possible to be able to survive the winter, so they’re a little more desperate than they typically would be.”

He says they’re rummaging through peoples’ garbage cans, dumpsters, and pet food that’s been left out.
