In a ceremony on the South Lawn both President Obama and Pope Francis addressed the crowd.

FOX News Radio's Jon Decker was in attendance:

Speaking from the South Lawn of the White House with President Obama at his side, Pope Francis praised the President for focusing on the environment and the need to cut air pollution.

(Pope Francis) "It seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to our future generation."

With 11,000 invited guests looking on the Pope also called for safeguarding religious liberty and rejecting discrimination.

Later Wednesday, Pope Francis celebrated mass at the Basilica of the Nation Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. It was the first canonization mass on U.S. soil... but it wasn't without controversy.

FOX News Radio's Steve Taylor reports from Washington:

The newest Roman Catholic saint is Father Junipero Serra, who marched up the California coast with Spanish troops during the 1700's. Serra built a string of missions to convert native Americans to Christianity. Many Latino Catholics today see Serra's canonization as long-overdue recognition of the Hispanic role in the American church. But others say that Father Serra enslaved converts and helped spread diseases that wiped out indigenous populations, and so he doesn't served to be honored as a saint of the church.
