Study: Social Security Overpaid Beneficiaries
Some questions are being raised about the management of the Social Security program, following news that the program overpaid beneficiaries to the tune of billions of dollars.
FOX News Radio’s Jon Decker reports:
According to a 10-year study by the agency’s inspector general, Social Security overpaid beneficiaries by nearly $17 billion, nearly half the people receiving disability benefits over the past decade.
Many payments went to people who earned too much money to qualify for benefits, or to those no longer disabled. Payments also went to people who had died or were in prison.
The government watchdog said that Social Security was able to recoup a little over $8 billion.
The IG report concluded that “the agency could do more to prevent the most common overpayments.”
