A software developer is the brains behind the design, installation and testing of software systems. Total jobs created in 2013: more than a million. Median hourly earnings: more than $45. You do need a degree.

A market research analyst studies market conditions in local, regional or national areas to examine potential sales of a product or service. Total jobs created this year: more than 438,000. Median hourly earnings of more than $29/hour.

A financial analyst handles financial status reports and more. More than 257,000 jobs created this year. Average per hour: $37 and change.

A physical therapist helps people with injuries or disabilities. More than 200,000 jobs created in 2013, that was a gain of 7%.

Finally, how about interpreter or translator? 69,000 jobs added in 2013, that was a gain of 14%. This industry expected to grow by 42% this decade.
