House Defeats Farm Bill
A shocker for House Republicans as a Farm bill, expected to pass, fails.
FOX News Radio’s Jared Halpern reports from Washington DC:
GOP leadership had high hopes and high confidence for a long-delayed, half a trillion-dollar Farm bill. But few Democrats supported it. Neither did more than 60 Republicans.
(House floor) “The yeas are 195 the nays are 234. The bill is not passed. (gavel / cheers)”.
The defeat was unexpected. House Speaker John Boehner predicted passage. But most Democrats opposed new work requirements on food stamp recipients and two billion dollars in annual cuts to those programs.
Many conservative Republicans argued those cuts didn’t go deep enough, helping defeat the GOP measure.
