Depression Study Gives Treatment Insights

It turns out one size doesn’t necessarily fit all when treating symptoms of depression.

FOX’s Jonathan Serrie reports:

A new study suggests the answer may lie in a small region of the brain called the anterior insula. Patients with higher activity in this region, responded well to a common anti-depressant medication; while those with lower activity benefited from talk therapy says Emory University Neurologist Helen Mayberg:

Mayberg: “The goal is really to get people well and to do that as fast as possible. To get them what they need and at the same time ensure that we don’t give them a treatment that won’t work for them.”

Currently, initial treatments work less than 40% of the time so Emory researchers hope their study leads to more targeted therapies for depression. The study is published online in the Journal JAMA Psychiatry.
