There's been a twist in the trial for the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman aboard a bus in India. Police say one of the men in jail has committed suicide, but his lawyer and family say he was murdered.
FOX News Radio's Emily Wither reports from our Middle East bureau:
Ram Singh was accused of driving the bus on which a 23-year-old student was raped by a group of six men in December. He had been on suicide watch and was found dead in his jail in New Dehli. Police say Singh hung himself with his clothes.
He had been facing the death penalty, but his lawyer and the defense council for two others facing trial doubt it was suicide.
(Lawyer) "No, it is not a suicide, it is a murder. It is a criminal count, murder with a criminal count, superseded by some motive."
The defense lawyers say their clients don't feel safe in jail. The Indian government has ordered an inquiry into the death.
