A female intern-volunteer at a California animal park was killed Wednesday after a fatal encounter with a male African lion.

FOX News Radio’s Jessica Rosenthal reports:

A volunteer at Cat Haven, an animal sanctuary in Fresno County, was killed by a lion after she entered the animal’s enclosure. Authorities say once the Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene, a deputy killed the lion per the facility’s safety protocols. A sanctuary spokesman told the local newspaper paper that the lion was a four-year-old male from Africa named Couscous. The park is home to about two dozen large cats including cheetahs, tigers and jaguars. Autopsies will be done on both the worker and the lion.
