Pickett: "Ale is like the red wine of beer and lager is like the white wine of beer. More crisp and snappy and clean."

Those as well as pilsner and some wheat beers considered lighter bodied and pair well with poultry, seafood and salads. Medium bodied amber lagers and pale ales can stand up to slightly heartier dishes like pork. With spicy food, reach for an India Pale Ale.

As for foods with a char such as burgers, steaks or rich stews:

Pickett: "Those go beautifully with brown ales, porters and stouts."

That's because they're made with malts which are roasted darker.
