October is breast cancer awareness month. Many women think they know where they stand when it comes to breast cancer risk. But a new poll shows there are a lot of misconceptions.

How much do you know about breast cancer risk? A new poll conducted by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists finds for many women, it’s less than they think. One common misconception: family history is the biggest risk factor, but most diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history at all. Another is self-breast exams are the best way to catch the disease, while experts say mammograms are by far the best detection tool.
