Breast Cancer Study Offers New Clues into Disease

The first thorough genetic study of breast cancer has yielded surprises that may help in the treatment and prevention of the disease.

FOX News Radio’s Bill Vitka has details:

Breast cancer is not one disease, but four.  That reshaping of our understanding of the disease is the result of the first comprehensive genetic analysis of breast cancer.  Among the most striking findings is that one of the most lethal types of breast cancer is genetically closer to a kind of ovarian cancer than it is to other breast tumors.

That, and other discoveries, are expected to lead to new treatments with drugs already approved for cancers in other parts of the body.  The new analysis is also expected to yield new, more precise ways to combat tumors for which there is now no known treatment.
