CT School Considers Fine For Absences
A Connecticut school Superintendent has a new plan to fine students $75 when they skip school.
FOX News Radio’s Courtney Kealy reports:
New Britain’s new Superintendent of Schools, Kelt Cooper’s plan would require the city to pass an ordinance charging a fine if a student skips school. Currently the state allows districts to levy a $25 fine for habitual truancy.
If the new plan passes the City Common Council, police officers would do the ticketing. The truants would have to show up to court and pay the fine or pay it forward in the community.
(Parent) “A lot of parents are probably going to say, ‘Oh I can’t afford $75.’ Well, then send your kids to do community service.”
This local parent agrees with the new plan. But the community, where nearly half of its students are regularly absent from school, remains divided.
