NJ Councilwoman Refuses To Say The Pledge, Causes Dispute

There’s a dispute in New Jersey over the Pledge of Allegiance. A Councilwoman refuses to say the Pledge, claiming it goes against separation of church and state.

FOX News Radio’s Ron Flatter reports:

The mayor of Plainfield, New Jersey says a City-Council member shows disrespect by refusing to pledge allegiance to the flag.

(Williams) “She kind of called me out for not reciting the pledge because I had asked her to please refrain from making noise while I was trying to read out the resolutions.”

That’s how Rebecca Williams says she found out Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs had a problem.

Even though she’s Christian, Williams also says that starting meetings with a prayer go against her belief that church and state should be separate.

(Williams) “I don’t believe that a prayer is necessary to open a public meeting.”

Robinson-Briggs says if Williams won’t pledge allegiance she should leave the room.
