Kofi Annan Meets With Syrian President, Tries to Stop Violence
Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has met twice with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, trying to reach an end to the violence there. International human rights groups estimate that 8,500 people have been killed across Syria since the uprising began a year ago.
FOX News Radio’s Chris Foster has details:
(Annan) “It’s going to be difficult, but we have to have hope.”
Kofi Annan, meeting with President Assad in Damascus, asking for democratic reform and for military attacks on civilians to stop.
(Annan) “I presented a set of proposals, concrete proposals, to the President, which will have a real impact on the ground.”
But Assad and the opposition have rejected negotiations: he calls them terrorist groups, and their leaders say Assad has killed too many people to talk now.
