Tracy’s Tax Tips #1: April 15th ISN’T This Year’s Federal Due Date

April 15th is coming, and for many of us, it’s just gonna keep going.  That’s because the deadline for filing federal tax returns is April 17th this year.

I’m Tracy Byrnes with the FOX Business Network, here with another of Tracy’s Tax Tips:

Well, April 15th falls on a Sunday this year, and – believe it or not – April 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C.  Now, Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln sign the law freeing slaves in the nation’s capital, nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2005, it was made an official federal holiday in D.C.

So, in observance, Tax Day will be moved forward to Tuesday, April 17th.  Now, that’s the date your federal tax return has to be either submitted electronically or postmarked by for it to be considered timely filed by the IRS.

Be sure to check your state return due date, though.  While most follow the federal government, Montana, Tennessee and Georgia do not.
